Introduction and Overview

In this opening session, we will introduce the topic and key components and terms involved, and start to look beyond a teacher’s lesson plan or the contents of a course book, and instead introduce the idea of an integrated approach to course design.

Topics will include:

• Introduction to the course and how we will work together
• Glossary of terms
• How does the teacher’s lesson plan fit in? Is this the right place to start?
• Is the course book ‘the course’?
• How do we choose which course book to use?
• The bigger picture – an integrated and sequential approach
• The four layers of planning
• The importance of a collaborative course design

Principles of course design

We will then spend four sessions focusing on the design of a course, and the following areas will be included during these sessions.

• Organisational mission statements/philosophy
• Setting out aims and objectives
• CEFR – levels, descriptors, advantages
• The ‘can-do’ approach to learning
• What inspectors are looking for when checking standards
• The rationale of curriculum and syllabus design
• Top-down, bottom-up or partnership planning?
• Forward, backward and central design
• Stages of planning
• Dos and Don’ts of planning a course
• The Eaquals charter on teaching and learning
• The needs of the learners
• Different types of needs analysis
• Schemes of work → planning lessons
• Summary of ‘the bigger picture

Assessment

Here we will have two sessions looking at issues relating to assessment:

• Teaching approaches and objectives
• Using CEFR descriptors and can-do statements in assessment
• Providing coherence
• Continuous and Performance assessment
• Summative and formative assessment
• Flexibility of assessment
• Validity and reliability of assessment
• Assessment before, during and after a course

Managing Change

Finally, we will briefly look at the process of managing change, in particular the importance of reviewing and modifying any changes you have made to your course design.

• Planning a review
• Conducting a review
• Implementing change

We will also reflect on the increasing need of both organisations and freelancers to design online courses to meet client needs.
